Are We Living in a Harvest Season? What the Story of Gideon Reveals About the Church Today
There is something stirring in the church right now. A prophetic season is unfolding, and understanding it could change the way you see your faith, your calling, and the generation you are living in. From the story of Gideon to the restoration of the prophetic, here is what this moment in history is calling us toward.
What Does Worship Actually Do?
Worship is not just a warm-up for a church service. It prepares and seeds the atmosphere of your life to release the glory of heaven on earth. When you genuinely pour your heart out to God, something shifts in the spiritual realm around you.
There is a story that illustrates this powerfully. A young man, just 21 years old, came home to find his mother being spiritually attacked. The Lord gave Him one instruction: sit at the piano and worship. Whatever you do, do not turn around.
He worshiped. A demonic presence grabbed him by the shoulder, leaving a wound that remains to this day. But he kept worshiping. Slowly, that presence released its grip and left the room. The lights in the house came back on.
He did not understand the full significance of what happened that night until decades later.
Why Did Jesus Say "Get Behind Me, Satan"?
When Jesus turned to Peter and said "Get behind me, Satan," most people assume He was being harsh or calling Peter evil. But there is a deeper revelation here.
In Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling, the first rule is never give someone your back. It is your most vulnerable position. So why would Jesus tell the enemy to get behind Him?
The answer is found in the book of Isaiah. The prophet wrote that the glory of God would be your rear guard. Jesus was not threatened by the enemy. He was saying: you are not facing my humanity. You are facing my divinity. You are standing in the glory of God.
"'The Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard.'" - Isaiah 52:12
That young man at the piano did not turn around because God told Him not to. He did not understand it then, but the glory of God was growing as He worshiped. The enemy was not facing a man in his own strength. The enemy was stuck in the glory.
What Happens When the Glory of God Covers Your Life?
When the glory of God is on your life, the enemy will try things and get stopped in ways you may never even notice.
Consider this real example. Someone broke into a food trailer in a church parking lot. They used a grinder to cut through thick metal plating, bent the plate, and got inside. There was a cash box with hundreds of dollars sitting open. They went through it and took nothing. Not a single item in the trailer was missing. Then the next day, a bus clipped the awning of the same trailer. When they closed the awning, it popped back into its original position with no damage at all.
You do not always know what the enemy is attempting in your life. But when you choose to serve God and not limit Him, the glory of God acts as a rear guard. Things that should have destroyed you come to nothing.
What Is the Story of Gideon Teaching Us Right Now?
In Judges chapter 6, an angel of the Lord appears to Gideon while He is threshing wheat in a winepress. He is hiding from the Midianites, doing the right work in the wrong place.
"Then the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak tree... and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress in order to save it from the Midianites." - Judges 6:11
The Midianites knew when the harvest season was. They planned their attacks around it. So Gideon hid in the winepress because it was not wine season. The enemy would not think to look there.
But God did not call Gideon to hide. He called him to conquer.
Can You Be in the Right Place at the Wrong Season?
Yes. And when you are, nothing gets produced. You can feel called to something and still be moving too fast, stepping out ahead of God into the right destination at the wrong time. A medical student is not yet a doctor. The title comes with the season, not just the calling.
Gideon was also operating from a famine mindset, trying to protect the little he had rather than trusting God for abundance. That posture keeps you hiding when God is calling you to advance.
Are We in a Harvest Season Right Now?
Multiple prophetic voices, gathered independently at a prophetic conference, all carried the same word: we are entering a harvest season. The seeds of revival, the seeds of a move of God, have been planted over many years. Now it is time.
You can count to a harvest based on when the seed went into the ground. The same is true spiritually. There are markers in church history, seasons of sowing, that point to this moment.
"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy...'" - Acts 2:17
Every great move of God has been marked by the return of the prophetic. When prophets have been silenced and then begin to speak again, it is a sign of awakening.
Why Has the Church Lost Its Power?
Over the last generation, the church largely dismissed the offices of the apostle and the prophet. The reasoning was that now that we have the Bible, we only need teachers and shepherds. Prophets were seen as too strange, too unpredictable.
But removing those offices left the church fighting with three fingers instead of a full fist.
This is not a new problem. In the 400 years before Jesus arrived, there was no national prophetic voice in Israel. Teachers and religious leaders took over. The result was a Spirit of legalism so thick that when the Messiah actually showed up, they crucified Him because He did not fit their theological framework.
The same pattern has repeated. When the prophetic disappears from the church, legalism fills the vacuum. People begin arguing over the letter of the law while losing the heart of God entirely.
What Is the True Purpose of a Prophetic Word?
A true prophetic word is not simply one that gets the details right or predicts the future accurately. Those things can happen, but they are not what makes a word true.
A true prophetic word does this: it points you back to the heart of God. It releases the will of heaven into the earth. It reveals the character and nature of God. It makes you look more like Jesus.
If a prophetic word gives you a reason to hate people, it is not a true prophetic word. If it does not redirect you toward relationship with the Father, it is not a true prophetic word.
What Is the Enemy Doing in This Season?
The enemy saw the seeds of revival being planted. He saw what God was depositing in the church. So he did what he always does: he sowed tares among the wheat.
"'The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat...'" - Matthew 13:24-25
Tares look exactly like wheat when they are young. You cannot tell the difference until they are fully mature. The wheat bows under the weight of its fruit. The tare stands straight up, full of pride.
The enemy's strategy is not to steal the harvest this time. It is to get the church to burn the whole field down. When false prophets get exposed, the temptation is to pull back from the prophetic entirely. But that is exactly what the enemy wants. Do not burn the field because of the tares. Separate them at harvest time and keep the wheat.
Are You Burning Down Your Own Field?
This principle applies personally too. When things are going well in your life, when seeds of effort and faithfulness are producing fruit, the enemy will try to get you to self-sabotage. Suddenly your confidence disappears. You fixate on one small problem and let it destroy everything around it.
Do not burn your field because of one weed. Work on removing the bad things one at a time. But do not destroy your relationships, your calling, or your faith because something small went wrong.
What Does This Generation Need to Know?
Gideon was under 30 years old when God called Him to break the enemy off an entire nation with only 300 men. The nation had been suppressed for years. But the victory was always available. They just needed someone willing to stop hiding and start advancing.
This is a Gideon generation. Young people who have seen the power of God move in their lives cannot argue that experience away. A teacher in a classroom cannot undo what God has done in a moment. When you have been healed, when you have witnessed the supernatural, that encounter marks you permanently.
The next great move of God will be carried by a generation that has seen His power and refuses to back down from it. The prophetic is returning. The supernatural is being restored. And the harvest is here.
Life Application
This week, choose to worship before you fight. Whatever situation feels overwhelming, whatever enemy seems to be pressing in, do not turn around and face it in your own strength. Instead, turn your face toward God and let the glory of God become your rear guard.
Practically, this means setting aside intentional time to worship, not as a religious routine, but as a genuine act of surrender. Stay in that place until something shifts. Do not cut it short because it feels long or uncomfortable.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect on this message:
Am I hiding in the winepress, doing the right work in the wrong season, or am I trusting God's timing for where He has called me?
Is there a field in my life, a relationship, a calling, a season of growth, that I have been tempted to burn down because of one small weed?
Am I seeking the gifts of God or the face of God? Am I trying to take from His hand, or am I trying to hold His hand?
Have I allowed legalism or religious routine to replace genuine relationship with the Father?
Do I believe that the glory of God is covering what I cannot see, even when the enemy seems to be making progress?
The harvest season is here. Do not let fear, frustration, or the presence of counterfeits keep you from stepping into what God has been preparing for this moment. Worship until the breakthrough comes. The glory of God is your rear guard.
