Raising the Bar Higher: Moving Beyond Ordinary Faith

In a world where many believers have settled for mediocre Christianity, God is calling His church to step into a higher dimension of faith and supernatural living. The time has come to move beyond comfortable, predictable faith and embrace the extraordinary power that God has made available to us.

What Does It Mean to Raise the Bar Higher?

Raising the bar higher means refusing to accept the status quo in our spiritual lives. It means believing God for greater miracles, deeper intimacy with Him, and more powerful demonstrations of His kingdom. Too many churches today operate with what could be called "drive-through Christianity" - quick, convenient, and lacking in genuine power.

The Problem with Comfortable Christianity

Many believers have become content with hearing about miracles rather than experiencing them. They've replaced the manifestations of the Holy Spirit with cultural Christianity that looks good on the surface but lacks the transforming power of God. This generation is hungry for authenticity, not the commercialized version of faith that has become so common.

Learning from Elijah's Bold Faith

The story of Elijah confronting the prophets of Baal provides a powerful example of what it means to raise the bar higher. When Elijah challenged the false prophets, he didn't just pray for fire to come down - he made the miracle seemingly impossible by soaking the altar with twelve jars of water.

Defying Natural Laws Through Faith

Elijah's actions defied logic. Fire and water don't mix - water extinguishes fire. Yet Elijah was operating in a higher dimension, trusting in a God who is greater than natural laws. He didn't just believe for a miracle; he created conditions that would make the miracle undeniable when it happened.

The water didn't just dampen the sacrifice - it filled trenches around the altar. When God's fire came down, it consumed everything: the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even licked up all the water. God never does miracles halfway.

Why God Responds to Extraordinary Faith

God responds to faith that steps beyond the ordinary. Throughout history, the greatest miracles have come when people dared to believe God for the impossible. This requires:

  • Stepping out of comfort zones

  • Acting on Holy Spirit promptings even when they seem unusual

  • Believing for outcomes that defy natural explanation

  • Taking practical steps that demonstrate faith

The Power of Spirit-Led Actions

Many of the most powerful miracles happen when believers are led by the Holy Spirit to do something they've never done before. This might mean praying in ways that seem unconventional, speaking words that challenge circumstances, or taking actions that appear illogical but are Spirit-directed.

What Areas Need a Higher Bar?

God is calling believers to raise the bar higher in multiple areas:

Spiritual Disciplines

- Prayer life: Moving from quick prayers to extended times in God's presence - Fasting: Embracing seasons of seeking God through sacrifice - Worship: Worshipping without watching the clock, getting lost in His presence - Bible study: Moving from surface reading to deep revelation

Faith Expectations

- Healing ministry: Believing for creative miracles, not just minor ailments - Prophetic gifts: Expecting full prophetic words, not just impressions - Financial breakthrough: Trusting God for supernatural provision - Family restoration: Believing for complete transformation

Personal Integrity

- Accountability: Being honest about struggles and addictions - Obedience: Following God's voice even when it's difficult - Authenticity: Living genuinely rather than performing Christianity

Breaking Free from Limiting Patterns

Many believers limit God by trying to create formulas for miracles. They think, "If God did it this way before, He'll do it the same way again." But God is creative and will surprise us with new methods and approaches.

God's Creative Methods

Sometimes healing comes through:

  • Simple prayer

  • Prophetic words

  • Laying on of hands

  • Anointing with oil

  • Communion

  • Acts of obedience

  • Unusual Spirit-led actions

The key is being led by the Holy Spirit rather than following human patterns or expectations.

Overcoming Spiritual Strongholds

One of the biggest barriers to raising the bar higher is dealing with hidden strongholds and addictions. These can include:

  • Substance addictions (smoking, drugs, alcohol)

  • Behavioral addictions (gambling, pornography)

  • Emotional strongholds (fear, unforgiveness, pride)

  • Religious spirits (legalism, performance-based faith)

The Power of Confession and Surrender

Freedom comes through honest confession and complete surrender. When we stop hiding our struggles and bring them into the light, God's power can break every chain. This requires courage and humility, but it opens the door to genuine transformation.

Stepping Into Revival

God is pouring out His Spirit on a generation that is hungry for authentic encounters with Him. This generation isn't satisfied with hearing about God's power - they want to experience it firsthand. They're willing to:

  • Worship for hours without watching the clock

  • Pray in the Spirit with passion and persistence

  • Believe for miracles that seem impossible

  • Live with radical obedience to God's voice

Signs of Coming Revival

Revival is already breaking out in various places, particularly on college campuses where young people are encountering God in powerful ways. These movements are characterized by:

  • Authentic worship and prayer

  • Genuine repentance and transformation

  • Supernatural manifestations

  • Bold evangelism and witness

Life Application

This week, identify one area of your life where you've been settling for "good enough" instead of believing God for His best. Whether it's your prayer life, your faith for healing, your financial situation, or a relationship that needs restoration, make a decision to raise the bar higher.

Take a practical step that demonstrates your faith - something that might seem illogical but shows God you're serious about believing Him for more. This could mean praying for someone you've never prayed for before, giving an offering that stretches your faith, or confessing a struggle you've been hiding.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What area of my spiritual life has become too comfortable or predictable?

  2. What addiction or stronghold do I need to surrender completely to God?

  3. What impossible situation in my life needs me to believe God for a miracle?

  4. How can I step out of my comfort zone this week to demonstrate greater faith?

  5. What practical action can I take that shows I'm raising the bar higher in my relationship with God?

Remember, God never does things halfway. When He moves in your life, He will complete what He starts. Trust Him to do exceedingly abundantly above all you can ask or think, and prepare to be amazed by His power working through your raised-bar faith.
