You Are Authorized: Understanding Your God-Given Authority Over the Enemy

There is a power struggle happening in the spiritual realm, and many believers are losing ground not because they lack power, but because they don't understand the difference between authority and ability. Once you grasp this distinction, everything changes.

What Does Luke 10:19 Actually Say About Power?

Luke 10:19 is a familiar verse, but most people read right past a critical detail hidden in the original Greek. In the King James Version, it reads: "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

At first glance, it looks like two equal powers facing off. But in the Greek, these are two completely different words.

Exousia vs. Dunamis: Why the Difference Matters

The first word, translated as the authority given to believers, is exousia. It means a legal right, a delegated permission, a governmental jurisdiction. It is authorized power.

The second word, describing what the enemy possesses, is dunamis. This is the root of our English word "dynamite." It refers to raw strength, supernatural capability, the actual force by which someone produces an effect.

So what Jesus is actually saying is this: "I have given you legal authority over every operative supernatural capability of the enemy." Not just his feelings of power. His entire capacity to act, inflict harm, and produce results in your life.

The enemy has power. He does not have permission.

Does the Enemy Really Have Power?

Yes, and it is important to acknowledge this honestly. Colossians tells us that Christ disarmed the powers and principalities. Notice it does not say He disarmed the weaklings. They are disarmed, but they are not powerless.

Satan's biggest lie is that he does not exist. But his second favorite lie may be that he is completely powerless. Both positions leave believers vulnerable. You need to understand what power he has and what power you have if you are going to see breakthrough.

The enemy has dunamis. What he does not have is exousia. He does not have the right to direct that force in your life. You do.

Where Does the Enemy's Authority Come From?

In Luke 4:6, during the temptation in the wilderness, Satan claims authority over the kingdoms of the world. He uses the word exousia. He says it has been "handed" to him. And Jesus does not dispute it.

Authority is always given by a greater authority. If the enemy received it, someone handed it to him. That someone was humanity. Adam and Eve, as heirs of the earth, handed authority to the enemy. Which means it was ours to begin with, and Jesus came to give it back.

Why Submission Is the Key to Walking in Authority

James 4:7 lays it out plainly: "Submit to God, resist the devil and He will flee from you."

The order is not accidental. Submission comes first. You cannot properly exercise authority until you are properly submitted to authority. This is exactly what the Roman centurion understood in Luke 7:8 when he said, "For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me."

His authority over others came directly from his submission to those above him. The same principle applies in the kingdom of God.

Submission Does Not Earn Authority. It Positions You to Exercise It.

God is not putting His thumb on you through submission. He is pulling you out from under the enemy's feet. When believers resist God's authority, they do not walk in freedom. They place themselves under the enemy's feet instead.

God did not give you authority to make you important. He gave you authority to make your obedience effective.

What the 70 Disciples Reveal About God's Plan for the Nations

When Jesus sent out 70 disciples two by two in Luke 10, the number was not random. Genesis 10 records the descendants of Noah's three sons: Japheth produced 14 nations, Ham produced 30, and Shem produced 26. The total is 70. These 70 became the foundation of every nation on earth.

Jesus was not just sending people into nearby towns. He was making a prophetic declaration: the nations that came through Noah now belong to the kingdom of God. He was signaling His intention to reclaim what had been lost.

When the 70 returned and reported that even the demons submitted to them, Jesus responded: "I saw Satan fall like lightning." He was not just celebrating their victories. He was declaring that the authority Satan held over the nations was beginning to fall.

Why Identity Matters More Than Ability

Immediately after giving the disciples authority, Jesus warned them not to build their identity around being powerful. He said in Luke 10:20: "Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven."

Authority is safest in the hands of people whose identity comes from belonging, not just obeying. You belong to God. That is the foundation. Obedience does not give you authority. It aligns you to exercise the authority Christ has already given.

How Prayer Activates Authority

Prayer is not a last resort. It is not begging. Prayer is the exercising of authority. It is how supernatural authority enters the atmosphere. It is a decree, a declaration, the sound of an authorized voice releasing heaven.

Daniel did not exhaust every natural option before praying. He opened his windows and decreed first. He prayed, received authority, and then moved in the natural from a position of power.

Too many believers get this backwards. They try everything in the natural and then pray when nothing works. The pattern should be: pray first, receive authorization, then step into the natural knowing heaven has already cleared the way.

When You Ask Someone to Pray for You, You Are Giving Them Authority

When you ask another believer to pray for you, you are submitting your situation under their prayerful watch. You are giving them permission to war on your behalf. You are authorizing them to release heaven for you. This is why it matters who you ask to pray. Get around people who know how to pray with authority.

The 12 Spies Were Not Just Spies. They Were Authorized Land Holders.

When Moses sent 12 spies into the promised land, he did not simply pick the best scouts. He sent one representative from each tribe, minus the Levites, because the Levites had no land inheritance. The Levites were responsible for worship, not land.

The 12 who went in were authorized land deed holders. They were not just surveying. They were going in to put their foot on the ground and declare: this is ours. The giants had to go. The enemy had to go.

Ten came back with a bad report and handed their authority to fear. Two came back with a good report and held their ground. The ten stopped themselves. They could not stop the nation, but they stopped themselves.

The report you speak over your circumstances matters. A negative report hands the enemy access. A good report aligns you with what God has already authorized.

What Provision Actually Means

God wants to release provision over your life. But provision is not just money. Provision is for a mission. It already has a purpose attached to it. It is a line item that has been approved for a specific assignment.

When you are submitted to God and walking in your authorized territory, the provision needed to maintain and expand that territory will come. But you cannot claim provision for territory that is not yours. Get in alignment with what God has called you to build, and the resources for that assignment will follow.

It Is a Season of Authorized Expansion

This is not a season to sit in spiritual retirement. It is a season to fortify what you have won and advance into what God has promised. The enemy has been pressing hard because he knows what you are about to step into. He wants you so distracted by the battle that you miss the provision already waiting behind you.

Stop praying for God to remove the snakes from your path. He said you would trample on them. He did not promise to clear the road. He promised you would walk through it unharmed. You are authorized to walk through this season unharmed.

Life Application

This week, flip the order. Before you make a phone call, send an email, have a hard conversation, or face a situation that has been pressing against you, stop and pray first. Not as a last resort. As your first act of authority. Decree what God has said over your situation. Declare your alignment with His will. Then step into the natural from a position of authorized power.

Ask yourself these questions as you go into the week:

• Where in my life have I been resisting the enemy without first submitting to God, and what does that submission actually need to look like?

• What negative report have I been speaking over my circumstances that may be handing the enemy access I never intended to give?

• Am I connected to a community of believers who pray with authority, and am I allowing them to stand with me in the battles I am facing?

• What territory has God authorized me to occupy that I have been too distracted, too weary, or too small-minded to step into?

You are not fighting for victory. You are fighting from it. The authority has already been given. The question is whether you are positioned to exercise it.
