Are You In the World But Not Of It? Understanding Kingdom Living

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to live as a citizen of God's kingdom while still being present in this world? This fundamental question challenges every believer to examine where their true allegiance lies and how they navigate daily life as representatives of heaven on earth.

What Does It Mean to Be In the World But Not Of It?

The distinction between being "in the world" versus being "of the world" is crucial for every Christian to understand. We are called to be present and engaged in our earthly circumstances while maintaining our heavenly citizenship and values.

The Reality of the Unseen World

2 Corinthians 4:18 reminds us to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." What we perceive as reality in the natural realm is actually just a shadow of the true spiritual reality operating behind the scenes.

Too often, we become consumed with temporary concerns - the paycheck that doesn't stretch far enough, the car that needs repair, the bills that pile up. While these are real challenges, they represent temporary shadows rather than eternal realities. When we focus solely on these natural circumstances, we get caught in cycles of worry and frustration, going around the same mountain repeatedly without making progress.

Understanding the Kingdom of Heaven

Every kingdom has essential elements that define its structure and operation. The kingdom of heaven is no different.

Who Is Your King?

While we may mentally acknowledge Jesus as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the more pressing question is: who is your king in daily practice? Who holds your allegiance? Who do you obey when it matters?

Consider these scenarios:

  • When the Holy Spirit prompts you to pray for someone in the grocery store, but you're running late

  • When a difficult coworker irritates you, but the Spirit whispers to forgive and bless them instead

  • When there's a missions offering, but you're worried about your personal expenses

In these moments, who becomes your lord - your schedule, your comfort, your financial security, or Jesus?

Understanding Territory and Authority

Jesus declared in Matthew 28:18-20 that "all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." He then commissioned us to "go and make disciples of all nations." This isn't just a suggestion for some believers - it's a mandate for all followers of Christ.

We are positioned strategically by God in specific locations, jobs, and relationships to shift the atmosphere and make those places look like heaven. We're called to colonize our assigned territories for the kingdom.

Living as Ambassadors of Heaven

As believers, we are ambassadors sent from the kingdom of heaven to planet earth. Ambassadors don't do their own bidding - they represent their sending country with full authority and speak on behalf of their king.

The Ambassador's Authority

When you declare healing over someone "by His stripes you are healed," you're not just offering a nice prayer. You're releasing the authority of the King of Kings and commanding that person's body to align with God's word. You're speaking as an ambassador with the full weight of heaven behind your words.

The Ambassador's Provision

Ambassadors don't need second jobs in their assigned countries because their sending nation provides everything they need. Similarly, when we're truly on the King's business, walking in obedience to His assignments, He provides what we need for the work He's called us to do.

What Does Kingdom Culture Look Like?

Culture represents the normal way people act - it's embedded in how we dress, speak, and conduct our daily affairs. The question is: are you living according to heaven's culture or earth's culture?

The Compromise of Worldly Culture

Our society often justifies ungodly behavior with phrases like "everyone does it" or "it's no big deal." This applies to entertainment choices, relationship standards, and moral decisions. But as kingdom citizens, our standard isn't what everyone else does - it's what God's word says.

Saturating Your Soul

What are you soaking in? If you spend hours scrolling social media or binge-watching shows but claim you don't have time for God's word and prayer, you're saturating your soul with worldly culture rather than kingdom culture. When spiritual battles come, you won't have the sword of the Spirit sharpened and ready.

Waging Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that "we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world." Our battle is in the spiritual realm, not against people.

The Example of Israel at the Red Sea

When God told Israel to camp between Migdol and the sea, facing the Egyptian god of destruction, He was positioning them in what seemed like the most dangerous place possible. But God wanted to demonstrate His power over all principalities and powers.

When you're truly in the world but not of it, you don't cower in fear when facing spiritual opposition. Instead, you stand with confidence, knowing that your God is bigger than any enemy force.

Rights and Responsibilities of Kingdom Citizens

As citizens of heaven, we have both rights and responsibilities outlined in God's word.

Our Kingdom Rights

  • Health and prosperity as our soul prospers (3 John 1:2)

  • Provision when we seek first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33)

  • All things working together for good when we love Him and walk in His purpose (Romans 8:28)

Our Kingdom Responsibilities

  • Seek first His kingdom

  • Walk in righteousness

  • Love Him with all our heart

  • Hear and obey His voice

Life Application

This week, examine every area of your life through the lens of this question: "Am I in the world but not of it, or am I in the world and of it?"

Look at your entertainment choices, your responses to difficult people, your financial priorities, and your time allocation. Where are you allowing worldly culture to influence your decisions rather than kingdom culture?

Make a commitment to align yourself fully with heaven's agenda rather than earth's agenda. Remember, you are an ambassador sent from the King of Kings to shift the atmosphere wherever He has positioned you.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In what specific situations do I find myself being "of the world" rather than just "in the world"?

  • What areas of my life need to be brought under the lordship of Jesus rather than being controlled by worldly pressures?

  • How can I better position myself as an ambassador of heaven in my current circumstances?

  • What steps will I take this week to saturate my soul with kingdom culture rather than worldly culture?

The choice is yours: will you live as a citizen of earth who happens to believe in Jesus, or will you live as a citizen of heaven who is temporarily stationed on earth for kingdom purposes?
