Whose Voice Are You Following? Learning to Recognize Your True Shepherd

In a world filled with countless voices competing for our attention, one of the most crucial questions we can ask ourselves is: whose voice am I actually following? This isn't just about the obvious choices between good and evil, but about discerning between voices that may sound similar but lead to vastly different destinations.

God Is Always Speaking - Are You Listening?

The first truth we must understand is that God is always speaking. He's like that friend who never stops talking - constantly communicating, constantly reaching out. The question isn't whether God is speaking; it's whether we're listening.

In John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd whose sheep hear His voice. He calls His own by name and leads them out. But here's what's remarkable: even when there are multiple flocks in the same pen with different shepherds calling, the sheep only respond to their own shepherd's voice.

The Three Voices in Your Life

The Shepherd's Voice

The shepherd is the one who will lay down his life for the sheep. This is Jesus - the Good Shepherd who knows you intimately and calls you by name. His voice leads to life, protection, and purpose.

The Hired Hand's Voice

The hired hand works at the same place as the shepherd and may sound similar, but when danger comes, they flee. These are people who seem to care about you but abandon you when things get difficult. They're there for the good times but disappear when the wolves come.

The Stranger's Voice

The stranger's voice can be deceptive because if you've never truly known your shepherd's voice, the stranger might sound familiar. These voices lead you away from your calling and purpose.

What Does It Mean to Follow a Stranger?

Following Ungodly Counsel

Sometimes we become strangers ourselves when we offer unsolicited advice that isn't rooted in God's wisdom. We give relationship advice when we're single, parenting advice when we're childless, or spiritual direction when we're not walking closely with God ourselves.

Church Hopping Without Purpose

Some people hop from church to church carrying their hurt and offense, never settling long enough to hear from their true shepherd. They're running from pain rather than running toward purpose.

Following Platform Chasers

In our social media age, it's easy to follow people simply because they have large platforms or impressive titles. But having a million followers doesn't make someone a shepherd. Sometimes the most influential voices online have the rottenest fruit in their personal lives.

The Danger of Skipping the Process

Just like David wouldn't have defeated Goliath wearing Saul's untested armor, we can't skip the process God has designed for our growth. When we try to fast-track our way to platforms and positions, we end up like someone wrapped in foam padding - unable to move effectively when the real battle comes.

The enemy offers the same temptation he offered Jesus in the wilderness: "Skip the process, and I'll give you the kingdom." But shortcuts lead to destruction.

How to Recognize Your Shepherd's Voice

Learn What His Voice Sounds Like to You

Some people hear God better in quiet moments, others in loud, chaotic times. But many struggle when the environment changes - they can hear in quiet but lose His voice when music starts, or vice versa. You need to know what God's voice sounds like to you personally.

Test Every Word You Receive

Don't run with every prophetic word or piece of advice just because it sounds good or tickles your flesh. Take everything to God and ask, "Is this You?" Even well-meaning people can have filters that distort the message.

Ask God to Reveal Himself

If you've never clearly heard God's voice, ask Him to make Himself known to you in an undeniable way. Be specific: "Lord, I need to hear You call my name so I know what Your voice sounds like."

Standing Your Ground Until You Hear Him

In this season of spiritual awakening and apostolic movement, many people are moving simply because others are moving. Everyone suddenly claims apostolic titles and platforms. But the real question is: what did God say to you?

Don't follow the crowd just because there's movement. Stand your ground until you hear your Shepherd tell you to move. The ones God is truly calling may still be hidden in caves, waiting for their exposure season while others are prematurely claiming titles they haven't been given.

Life Application

This week, commit to tuning out the noise and tuning into God's voice. Start by identifying whose voices you've been following that aren't leading you closer to Jesus. Break up with those voices - whether they're social media influencers, well-meaning friends giving ungodly advice, or your own inner voice that leads you astray.

Spend time in prayer asking God to make His voice clear to you. If you've never heard Him speak your name, ask Him to do so in a way you'll recognize. Then test everything you hear against His character and His Word.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Whose voice have I been following that I need to dismiss?

  • What does God's voice sound like to me personally?

  • Am I following my Shepherd or just following the crowd?

  • What processes is God asking me to trust instead of trying to skip ahead?

  • How can I better tune my ears to hear God's voice above all the other noise in my life?

Remember, the Good Shepherd knows you by name and has plans for your good. His voice is the only one worth following, even when it leads through difficult valleys. Learn to recognize it, trust it, and follow it wherever He leads.
