From Refugee to Royalty: Understanding Your Kingdom Authority
Have you ever wondered why some Christians seem to live in constant defeat while others walk in victory? The difference often lies in understanding our true identity in God's kingdom. Many believers live as spiritual refugees when they're actually called to be kingdom royalty with real authority.
What Does It Mean to Live as a Spiritual Refugee?
Living as a spiritual refugee means constantly running from the enemy instead of standing in authority. It's spending your entire Christian life trying to stay one prayer ahead of the devil, always looking over your shoulder, always afraid he might catch up.
This refugee mindset keeps believers in a defensive position, begging God for protection rather than exercising the authority He's already given them. Instead of winning, they're whining. Instead of advancing, they're wandering.
The Biblical Foundation: Cities of Refuge
Understanding the Old Testament System
In Numbers 35, God established cities of refuge for those who killed someone unintentionally. These weren't for murderers, but for those guilty of manslaughter - accidental killing. The person could flee to these cities to escape the "avenger of blood" who had the legal right to pursue them.
Here's the crucial detail: the refugee's freedom wasn't based on time served, but on the death of the high priest. When the high priest died, all refugees were immediately released and could return to reclaim their possessions.
Jesus as Our High Priest
Jesus didn't come to build another city of refuge - He became the High Priest whose death released every prisoner at once. When He died on the cross, He said "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." This transformed intentional murder into unintentional manslaughter, giving everyone access to freedom.
The avenger (Satan) lost his legal claim the moment our High Priest gave His life. You're not waiting for a sentence to expire - you're standing on a finished death.
Why Do Christians Stay in Refugee Camps?
Fear of the Enemy
Many believers stay in spiritual refugee camps because they feel safe there. They think if they just hide in their prayer closets and stay close to church, the enemy can't touch them. But this isn't the abundant life Jesus promised.
Lack of Understanding About Authority
The problem isn't that these believers aren't saved - they simply don't understand the authority that comes with their salvation. They pray like peasants instead of princes and princesses. They beg instead of decree.
What Does Kingdom Authority Look Like?
Binding and Loosing
In Matthew 16:19, Jesus gave His disciples authority to bind and loose. "Binding" means to forbid or place under legal obligation - putting the enemy under the terms and conditions of God's kingdom. "Loosing" means to permit, release, or annul contracts the enemy has against you.
This isn't just about getting free from the enemy - it's about canceling his legal right to pursue you and getting back everything he stole.
From Saved to Sent
The church isn't just a place you attend; it's an authority you carry. It's time to go from saved to sent. Your calling determines your direction, but your authority determines your impact.
How Do We Walk in Kingdom Authority?
Change Your Mindset
Stop thinking like a refugee and start thinking like royalty. You have crowns waiting for you in heaven - that's kingdom language. Peasants don't get crowns; royalty does.
Pray with Authority
Instead of begging God for protection, start decreeing His will. Understand that your circumstances have already been changed in heavenly places - you just need to pull down what's already been decided.
Forgive Like Jesus
When people wrong you, respond like Jesus did: "Father, forgive them, they don't know what they're doing." This releases them from spiritual bondage and removes the enemy's legal right to avenge.
What Happens When Kingdom Shows Up?
Acts 2:43 tells us that when the kingdom of God showed up in full force, "many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles." The word "many" in Greek means continuous - not just a bunch of miracles and then done, but ongoing, continuous supernatural activity.
When kingdom authority is properly understood and exercised, miracles become normal, culture shifts, and the enemy's strongholds crumble.
Life Application
This week, it's time to leave the refugee camp. Stop living in fear of what the enemy might do and start walking in the authority Jesus has already given you. Identify areas where you've been hiding instead of advancing, running instead of ruling.
Ask yourself these questions:
Where in my life am I still living like a refugee instead of royalty?
What "chains" am I still sitting under that Jesus has already broken?
How can I start praying with authority instead of begging?
Who in my life needs to hear that they're not bound to be a refugee anymore?
The High Priest has died, the gates are open, and you're free to reclaim everything the enemy stole. It's time to walk out of the refugee camp and into your kingdom calling. You're not just saved - you're sent with authority to advance God's kingdom wherever you go.
